Butternut canker (Sirococcus clavigignenti-jugland-acearum) is a virulent disease, killing butternut at all life stages (mature trees, saplings, and seedlings). Occurring throughout the Northeast and Southern Regions, the disease is projected to have the capability to kill most of the butternut resource. Control strategies are focused on propagation of disease- resistant seedlings from trees found to survive the disease (USDA-Forest Service 1998).
Beech Bark Disease
Beech bark disease (Nectria coccinea var. faginata) attacks American beech, causing widespread mortality in mature trees. The disease is endemic throughout the Northeast Region, but today is of most concern in West Virginia and areas to the south and east of that state (USDA-Forest Service 1998).
