The area of forestland in the United States declined by almost thirty percent between 1630 and 1907 (from about 1.05 billion acres to a little over 759 million acres), driven primarily by relentless conversion of forested land to agriculture. Since 1907, however, the area of forestland in the U.S. has remained remarkably stable (Figure 7) with forests in 2002 covering an estimated 749 million acres.
