In the West, where hardwoods make up a relatively small portion of growing stock volume, net hardwood growth is declining (Figure 18) even though the area of hardwood forests is increasing (Figure 12). The apparent contradiction is explained by the fact that aging stands resulting from decades of little harvest and protection from fire are now beginning to decline over extensive areas.
