Just as hardwood growing stock volumes are increasing throughout the East, sawtimber volumes are increasing as well. Also as with growing stock in general, the rate of increase in sawtimber volume has slowed in recent years in both the North and South, an effect that can be clearly seen in nationwide sawtimber data.
Consistent with the fact that growing stock volumes in all diameters are increasing, sawtimber volumes are increasing in all diameter categories in both the North American Forest and South American Forest. A dramatic leveling of sawtimber volume increases can be seen in all diameter categories in the North region after 1997; it is not clear whether this completely realistic or due to an anomaly in the data. A similar, but less dramatic, leveling is seen in all diameter classes for the South region.
